In a world of economic uncertainty, digital disruption, and rising misinformation, one profession continues to stand out for reliability and integrity: Chartered Accountants.
According to the fifth wave of the Edelman DXI Trust Survey for Chartered Accountants Worldwide (CAW), the profession ranks third globally for trust, just behind doctors and engineers – and significantly ahead of other accountancy qualifications.
While trust in the broader accountancy profession has dipped slightly, trust in Chartered Accountants remains steady, creating a record 5-point gap that underscores the enduring value of the Chartered designation.
“At a time of eroding trust in institutions, Chartered Accountants are bucking the trend,” says Ainslie van Onselen, Chair of CAW.
“In a world shaped by AI, disinformation, and rising demand for accountability, our profession is standing tall – not just for technical excellence, but as guardians of trusted data and ethical leadership.”
Trusted partners in times of transformation
Since 2018, Chartered Accountants have guided businesses through global crises – from COVID-19 and Brexit to economic shocks and the cost-of-living crisis. Today, they are increasingly relied upon to navigate digital transformation, AI adoption, and the challenges of misinformation.
The rise of the data guardian
The survey reveals that 3 in 4 businesses now rely on Chartered Accountants to ensure data integrity, a 6-point increase since 2023. Their role extends beyond finance to ethical stewardship, helping organisations make responsible decisions in an age of algorithmic risk.
Opportunities for leadership
Trust in Chartered Accountants is rising, with credibility on purpose-driven issues up 13 points. While expectations from business leaders are growing, this highlights a unique opportunity for the profession to lead – bridging finance, ethics, and digital innovation.
“This is more than a vote of confidence – it’s a mandate for leadership,” adds Ms van Onselen.
“Chartered Accountants are being called to guide businesses through ethical and digital frontiers. CAW’s global network is equipping members and students to meet this moment with integrity, insight, and impact.”
“At a time when truth is contested and data is vulnerable, the role of Chartered Accountants as data guardians has never been more vital,” says Penelope Mantzaris, Director at Edelman DXI.
“Our research shows they are not only trusted, but increasingly indispensable.”
