Recorded on: June 17th 2021
On April 20, 2021 Business Insider ran a story by journalist Juliana Kaplin headed ‘American corporations are paying their fair share – to international tax havens”. In 2021, over three years after the tax reforms of December 2017, is there factual support for this statement?
This non-technical discussion looks at the history of corporate tax reduction via offshore structures together with the impact, still emerging, of the 2017 changes to the way the federal government taxes offshore income. We also look at international trends.
We look at the public financial data of three companies across three industries that were (and sometimes are) often criticized for their use of offshore structures: Microsoft, Citigroup and Merck. What has, and has not changed over time, and why?
This is a data-driven discussion, and the presenter, Murray Buckman, does not take a political view. The purpose is to help the audience to understand and filter the “noise” emitting from across the political and media spectrum.
The original meeting was organised for members of the CAW Network USA Northern California chapter and their guests and was run on June 17th 2021.
