SUMMARY: In this event we are partnering with the Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland and focusing on Technology and Accounting. Our first session runs for about 30 minutes and includes two 15-minute presentations. We will then take a discussion break for 12 minutes where we will allocate attendees to groups. When they arrive in the groups, they will be met by a group leader – one of our CAW Network USA executive team. They will then discuss the key takeaways they have from the presentations. Also, to decide a few that are ‘most important’. We will then reconvene in a plenary session and group leads will be asked to share the most important takeaways. (8 minutes). Then we bring the speakers back, introduce our moderator and move to Q&A for the remaining time (Est. 30minutes). Total time including introduction and polls 90 minutes.

This presentation will cover:

• IT Risk Analytics and accountants – a perspective from the National partner covering IT Risk Analytics for CFGI
• The role of the CIO for a major accounting practice – where the CIO is also a Chartered Accountant

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of today’s session, attendees will have achieved the following objectives:

  • Understanding IT Risk – opportunities and threats. A Risk Advisory perspective.
  • The role of a CIO from the perspective of a Chartered Accountant who is a CIO.
  • Identify key questions arising and discuss their potential impact and how accountants / auditors can better understand client needs and agree solutions.
  • Get answers to questions raised from the presentations and breakout discussions.

CPE Credits

Participants will earn 1 CPE credits (for the first 50 minutes of the program 1 CPE credit is awarded but only if the program is 50 minutes. For each additional complete 25 minutes of program time an additional 0.5 CPE credits can be awarded.) We can agree the exact credit for the program once we know the exact start /end times.

Note: In order to be awarded the full credit hours, you must attend / participate in the full session.

PREREQUISITES: No prerequisite provided attendees are qualified CAs and/or CPAs. Other non CPA interested parties are also invited to observe.

BA Daniel Shafrir

Topic: Technology and Accountants – A Risk Advisory perspective

Daniel is the national leader of the IT Risk Advisory practice at CFGI. He brings over a decade of experience in technology and internal controls to clients of varying sizes and complexity, across a range of industries.

Daniel’s extensive subject matter expertise includes: design assessment and operational effectiveness testing for all focus areas relevant to financial statement audits and SOX with an emphasis on IT general controls; auditing IT dependencies, such as key reports and spreadsheets, interfaces, and automated controls; SOC 1 and SOC 2 reviews; cybersecurity risk assessments based on a number of leading industry frameworks; blockchain and distributed ledger technology; and a wide range of IT governance support, covering COSO, IT operations, cybersecurity, and data privacy.

Prior joining CFGI’s IT Risk Advisory practice, Daniel served as the IT Audit Subject Matter Expert at PwC’s National Office. Throughout his career, Daniel has provided IT SOX, SOC 1, SOC 2, Compliance, and External Audit services to dozens of clients, from privately held start-ups to multinational banks. Daniel has unique insights regarding innovative solutions, such as the impact of Robotics Process Automation (RPA) and blockchain technologies to the internal control environment. At the same time, Daniel brings a practical and pragmatic approach on topics like cybersecurity and data privacy to the C-suite and the Board.

Daniel holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of St Andrews in the UK, he is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), as well as a Chartered Accountant (CPA equivalent) from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in the UK. Daniel is the current President of the New England Chapter of the Association of Chartered Accountants in the US, as well as an Advisory Board Member for the FinTech Certificate Program, offered by the University of South Florida.

BA Brice Craig

Topic: Technology and Accountants – An accountant as CIO: Opportunities and Threats

Craig is PwC Canada’s Chief Information Officer. He is responsible for providing a robust, innovative and secure information technology infrastructure. Craig provides the strategic vision for the internal Technology team as it evolves in support of providing technology at the speed of business. He has been in Canada for over 5 years as PwC Canada has moved significant key processes into the cloud with a focus on security and support for the mobile workforce (which is obviously less mobile at the moment, during the pandemic). He started his career in Scotland where he became a Chartered Accountant with ICAS before specializing in information technology. He has spent the last 30 years with PwC in the UK, US and Canada.

He served on the ICAS Exam Board, representing Information Systems, for a number of years, before he left the UK to move to the US. He has been involved in large organizational technology change across different cultures and multiple territories. He is also a Member of The British Computer Society now known as BCS, The Chartered Institute of IT.

BA Sarah Speirs

Sarah leads on growing membership engagement and delivering value for ICAS members. Responsible for developing integrated communication strategies to promote ICAS’ external voice and influence with Governments and stakeholders and ensuring that members are better connected and engaged with the work ICAS does. Prior to this Sarah spent over 18 years with RICS and was their director of professional engagement.
